Sustainable Event

The European Resource Forum 2018 has been planned as an environmentally friendly and sustainable event in line with the “Guidelines for the Sustainable Organisation of Events” (see also). The following measures have been taken (examples):

Carbon Neutral Event

The European Resources Forum 2018 is a carbon-neutral event. Environmentally friendly and sustainable measures in the conference concept already ensure that many greenhouse gas emissions are avoided. In addition, the CO2 emissions of the participants’ travels, the venue and the catering were compensated. The German Environment Agency has purchased the corresponding carbon offset certificates in support of the project “Sichuan Rural Poor-Household Biogas Development Programme” in China. This project aims to equip up to one million low-income smallholder households with climate-friendly biogas reactors and practical biogas cooking facilities.

Vegan and vegetarian catering

Only vegan and vegetarian catering will be served at the European Resources Forum 2018. Vegan food will be labelled. “Tafelservice”, a Berlin-based catering company, will provide fresh and high-quality seasonal food using many locally sourced and certified organic ingredients. The bread, for example, is from “Weichardt”, Berlin’s oldest organic bakery. Coffee and tea are not only organic but also fairtrade.

Avoidance and reuse of food waste

The catering company “Tafelservice” will plan exactly how much food is needed in order to avoid waste. Should there be any leftovers, which might occur in the case of no-shows, “doggy bags” will be provided for delegates to take leftovers home. “Tafelservice” will distribute any remaining food to soup kitchens. Inedible food waste will be used as fertiliser or for bioenergy production.

Waste avoidance

In order to avoid paper waste, there will be no conference folders or printed programmes. Use of a conference app avoids printing several hundred agendas. Conference materials will only be issued to delegates at the check-in desk as necessary. Information material, such as flyers, will be displayed in the exhibition area.

Mobility

The venue for ERF 2018 is “Ludwig Erhard Haus”, which is centrally located near to the “Bahnhof Zoologischer Garten” railway station. The German Environment Agency recommends that participants use public transport. The “Deutsche Bahn Event Ticket” allows cheaper train travel. The CO2 emissions generated by delegates’ travel to and from the event have been offset by the German Environment Agency (see Carbon Neutral Event).
